Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), one of India’s leading defence public sector undertakings under the Ministry of Defence, has taken another remarkable step in battlefield safety by developing bulletproof ambulances for the Indian Army . These new vehicles mark a crucial advancement in ensuring that injured soldiers receive timely and secure medical evacuation even under direct enemy threat.
Designed for Frontline Operations
The new ambulances are built on the Tata 407 platform, making them lightweight yet durable for rapid deployment in rugged terrains and conflict zones . Equipped with ballistic and blast protection, they can withstand small arms fire and improvised explosive device (IED) blasts, ensuring that medical staff and casualties remain safe during evacuation operations.
Each vehicle features 4x4 mobility, an extended range, and high ground clearance, enabling operation in remote and hostile areas. The modular design allows integration of essential medical support systems such as oxygen supply, stretchers, and advanced monitoring equipment .
Built by Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ)
The project was engineered at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ), one of AVNL’s key production units known for its expertise in military vehicles. The model displayed at the 2024 International Police Expo in New Delhi drew wide attention for its V-shaped hull design and ballistic-resistant glass, providing superior protection against explosive pressure and shrapnel.
Boost to India’s Self-Reliance in Defence
AVNL, carved out of the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board, plays a central role in advancing Aatmanirbhar Bharat through indigenized defence systems . With these ambulances , the company demonstrates its capability to combine engineering innovation with humanitarian commitment—ensuring that no soldier is left vulnerable on the battlefield.

A Step Forward in Combat Medicine
Beyond its armoured protection, the bulletproof ambulance is a symbol of care and courage, bridging the gap between combat and medical support. Once fully commissioned, these vehicles will serve as lifelines in border and counter-insurgency zones—saving lives while standing resilient against the enemy’s firepower.
In the future, AVNL plans to enhance these vehicles further with NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protection, smart communication suites, and potential integration with AI-based casualty tracking systems, reflecting India’s growing prowess in defence innovation.
